Migration

-Christina Garcia-

Where Are Migrants Distributed?

There are different types of migration like  international and internal migration. International migration is when migrants move to a different country. This is also called external migration. Internal migration is the change of residence within national boundaries. Internal migrants only change state, province, city, or municipality.

The principal sources of immigrants during US immigration history in the seventeenth and eightteenth centuries were from Europe and Africa. During the nineteenth to early twentieth century, immigrants came from Europe and Asia. In the late twentieth to the early twenty first century, immigrants in the US came from Latin America and Asia. Those are the principal sources of immigrants in US history.

Where Do People Migrate Within a Country?

Interregional migration is the permanent movement from one region of a country to another. An example of interregional migration in US history was the Great Migration. It occurred twice from 1910-1940 and a little while later, it occurred from 1940-1970. During the Great Migration, about 1.4 million African Americans migrated from the south to the northern states to leave racism behind and look for better jobs. This is an interregional migration because they moved from the south region of the US to the north region.

There are three forms of interregional migration. They are rural to urban, urban to suburban, and urban to rural. Rural to urban refers to the movement from the countryside to the city. Urban to suburban refers to the movement from the city to a small residential

community. Urban to rural is the exact opposite of rural to urban migration. Overall, these forms of interregional migration are all very different from each other.

Why Do People Migrate?

Push and pull factors are conditions that encourage people to come or leave (push them or pull them.) There are many push and pull factors that are considered when migrating. Examples of political push and pull factors are slavery, refugees, freedom, and political conflict. Some examples of environmental push and pull factors are droughts, floods, good climates, and arable farmland. Unemployment, guest worker programs, natural resources, and job opportunities are examples of economic push and pull factors.

There were flows of migrant workers in Europe and Asia. In the 1960's, Germany allowed guest workers into their country. Most of the available jobs in Europe like driving buses, collecting garbage, or repairing streets were being taken by immigrants. But none of the locals would accept low-status jobs like those. Even so, they no longer accept immigrants. In China, their economy boomed  and it atttracted migrants from surrounding countries. They wanted to work in their factories. So they let them come to Southwest Asia where they needed people to work in the oil business. But conditions weren't good and it caused problems.

Why Do Migrants Face Obstacles?

There are types of immigrants that are given preference to enter the US. These are immigrants who want family reunification, skilled workers, and diverse people. The US has set a number of people that can migrate from each area. The Congress, though, prefers if immigrants come to the US to be with their family, to work, or to create diversity in our country.

Unauthorized immigrants have many different characteristics. The unauthorized immigrants in the US are mostly from Latin American countries, especially Mexico. There are about 11.2 million illegal immigrants in the US. One million of them are children and eight million of them are employed. These immigrants are mainly found in California and Texas.

Americans and Europeans have different attitudes toward immigrants. The United States' major concern is illegal immigration. But they also feel like immigrants were taking too many jobs. Europe's biggest fear is that international immigrants will undermine their culture. Cultural diversity is a problem for them because their culture has been there for many generations. They are also very hostile to people who aren't from their country.
